Paint Your Own Pottery Café
Creative with Clay in Christchurch
10 May 2017
With the increased interest in pottery and creativity, especially following the BBC’s Great Pottery Throwdown, The Clay Studio in Christchurch is offering customers the opportunity to create their own pieces from scratch, working with wet clay.
Our Introduction to Clay Course introduces hand-building techniques, teaches the use of a slab roller to produce a consistent slab of clay and shows how to use different cutting and shaping tools. Over the course of two Thursday evening Workshop sessions we will help you to create a clock and bowl made from clay. The items will then be fired so that they become ceramic bisque. A third session will be for painting the bisque, after which they will be glazed and fired again ready for collection. Participants will undertake the entire creative process.
The course consists of two formal Workshops on Thursday 25 May and Thursday 8 June running from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. A third session is available for painting. The course is suitable for adults only. The cost is £45 per person (£40 for Clay Friends members). This includes all materials, use of tools and equipment, glazing and firing and all tuition and a reviving hot drink with biscuits to keep you going! The third session is at your convenience for painting the item.
Mary Payne of The Clay Studio noted how visitors were becoming keen to learn new techniques:
“We have always encouraged our customers to try different techniques to achieve different finishes and this has resulted in many beautiful pieces. Lots of our visitors have been inspired by the BBC programme The Great Pottery Throwdown and are now looking to expand their skills by working with wet clay.”
The Introduction to Clay Course is designed as a starter course, ideal for beginners, with future courses offering new projects and new techniques for working with wet clay. As with all Workshops at The Clay Studio they are educational and informative but also great fun.
The Clay Studio is open 6-7 days every week with late night opening on Thursdays. It is an ideal place to relax as a family as there is something for everyone to paint in a relaxed, friendly, creative atmosphere. The staff are always available to provide guidance and encouragement.
The Clay Studio is a contemporary pottery painting studio. We have a wide range of blank pottery pieces for painting which are fired and usually ready for collection within four days. The Clay Studio is ideal for parties such as hen parties, birthday parties or just the opportunity to get together and relax with friends and family. The Clay Studio is a licensed café with a varied menu that is locally sourced wherever possible.
